     History

Would the Vikings do anything for money?

In this unit, the children will learn about the Vikings, and consider the reasons why they raided and then settled in Britain. They will investigate the popular view of the Vikings as raiders, ruthless in their ways of obtaining wealth. They will study primary sources of evidence, such as accounts by monks of the raid on Lindisfarne, as well as archaeological finds, to understand why this interpretation of the Vikings has become so popular. They will examine King Alfred’s struggle and victory over the Vikings, linking back to Year 5 Unit 1: The Anglo-Saxons. Links will also be made to Year 4 Unit 2: Roman Britain

In this unit, the children will:

    • develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British history
    • understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources
    • establish clear narratives within and across the periods
    • develop the appropriate use of historical terms
    • address historically valid questions about cause and significance
    • construct informed responses that involve the thoughtful selection and organisation of relevant historical information
    • note contrasts and connections over time.

    Key vocabulary:

Raid, raider, monk, monastery, Viking, sacked, looted, abbey, migrate, settle, overpopulation, inheritance, causes, invader, settler, push and pull factors, significant, Wessex, monarch, cult, runes, longhouses, saga.

    Geography

Journeys – Where does all our stuff come from?

The UK imports goods from all over the world. The top five products imported by the UK are: petrol, cars, packaged medicaments, computers and vehicle parts. The top five import origins to the UK are Germany, China, Netherlands, USA and France.

In this unit, the children will find out about the UK’s global trade links, investigating where everyday products come from and the journeys they take to our homes. This builds on work children may have done in KS1 looking at the geography of food. The children will also map the journeys taken by items, and research the pros and cons of buying local or imported goods.

In this unit, the children will:

    • describe and understand key aspects of human geography, including: types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water
    • use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied.

      Art

    Painting - Watercolour

    Georgia O'Keeffe and Luiza Vizoli

    During this unit we will:

    • Explore and be inspired by the work of Georgia O'Keeffe and Luiza Vizoli
    • Create some observational drawing of flowers and petals
    • Explore watercolour paints

     Art

Drawing - Perspective, scale and proportion

    Van Gogh

This unit on perspective builds on previous units on tone, shade, hatching, cross hatching, a knowledge of light and shade and contour drawing to produce a “true” image.

    During this unit we will:

    • Explore and be inspired by the work of Van Gogh
    • Create some observational drawing
    • Explore drawing techniques

    Year 5 Long Term Overview

    PE

Please ensure that your child comes to school in their P.E. uniform on PE days.

     Y5 PE days are currently:

    5B - Tuesday and Friday

    5D - Tuesday and Friday

Indoor Kit =  plain white t-shirt, black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and suitable shoes (pumps or trainers). No football shirts or strips please.

Outdoor Kit = plain tracksuit bottoms and warm jacket and shoes suitable for all weathers (trainers)

Please remember that no jewellery should be worn and earrings MUST be removed by the child for any PE session. Long hair needs to be tied back.

    Homework Menu

As part of our wider curriculum topic, children can also choose to complete homework from our  homework menu (see below). This is optional, however, it will be enjoyable for the children and it will allow them to take their learning further and share it with you at home. Once any tasks have been completed please bring them into school and we will do our best to display as many of them as possible.

We would love to see how creative you can be and display your hard work for all to see.

    Times Tables

It is still important to ensure that children in Y5 are secure and fluent with their times tables facts as they are needed in many aspects of the Y5 maths curriculum. Without the quick recall of these facts, maths learning becomes much more challenging as children need to work hard to recall the times table fact they need as well as work through new methods.

Below is a grid of the core multiplication facts we would like children to learn with quick recall and fluency. Once children know these facts, they can use them to work out any other facts (eg: knowing 2x and 10x tables means they can calculate 12x)

Please continue to support your child with learning these facts and encouraging them to play on Times Table Rock Stars also: https://ttrockstars.com/

    Reading and Spelling

Reading is an essential part of the curriculum and opens up many other curriculum areas for the children. We expect children to read at least three times a week.  Some children may choose to read independently, which is completely fine, but it is also helpful for adults to check children understand the vocabulary within the text and understand the content of what they are reading.

If you are struggling to find a new book, check out the Reading for Pleasure section on the website here

One thing that you could do at home to improve your English skills is to try to learn how to read and spell as many of these words as possible. These are the words you have to know by the end of Year  6.

    USEFUL WEBSITES:

    https://ttrockstars.com/

This is a fun and competitive way for your child to learn their times tables. Look out for new competitions and challenges! All children will have their log ins given to them before the end of the first week back, just in case any have been lost!

      Times Tables Songs

These songs are really catchy tunes that may help your child master their times tables if they are finding them difficult to remember.
